Qualities of a good official • Integrity • Professionalism – on and off the field • Consistency – comes with experience • Decisiveness – show good judgment • Communication Skills • Common Sense – be fair, understand what is best for the game, know the rules and how to apply them Attitude • How do you approach your work? • Be an asset to the officials you work with • Stay humble and hungry • Don’t be that guy that no one wants to work with • Patience, patience, patience • Be happy for fellow officials success • Have fun Preparation • Proper preparation prevents poor performance

  • Get in shape

  • Study the rule book

• Proper preparation builds confidence

• Focus on getting better – strive to be the best official you can be

• Develop a weekly routine

• Have a commitment to your craft

• Self evaluation = self improvementHave a balanced path to success – physical conditioning, rules knowledge and video study

• Be coachable – never use the phrase “yea but”

• Be accountable – if you make a mistake on the field – own it

• There is no substitute for experience – get as much grass time as you can

You have got to be GOOD before you can be Great!

• Will you step up when the time is right?

• Appearance/pressure – command respect
